Meniscus Tear

When you suddenly twist or rotate the knee, while foot is planted on ground. Each of your knee has two meniscus, which are C shaped cushions between shin bone and thigh bone. They act as ‘ shock absorber’ and play a important role to transmit weight through knee smoothly and make knee stable.

The outer portion of the meniscus , referred to as red zone, which has good blood supply and can heal on its own, if tear is small. In contrast, the inner two third of the meniscus known as white zone- which does not have a good blood supply, so tear in this inner zone, will not heal on their own.

Causes:

  • It is due to trauma or a part of degeneration process, that happens over time.
  • You can get injury , when you kneel, squat or lift something heavy.
  • More prone risk to Athletes, who play contact sports like football.
  • Acute meniscus tear, often happen during contact sports.

Symptoms:

  • A popping sensation while walking
  • Locking of knee joint
  • Pain in knee joint aggravates on weight bearing
  • Limping gait
  • Difficulty in straightening or bending your knee fully.

Investigation of choice:

MRI must be done to rule out tear and grading of tear.

Treatment:

It depends on type, size, and grade of tear. We also consider patient’s age.

If your knee is stable, not locking up and symptoms resolve, then NON-SURGICAL INTERVENTION may help.

Surgery depends on your grade of tear. If it is mild( grade 1 or 2), you may not need surgery. If it is grade 3 , then Arthroscopic Repair is required.

PRP THERAPY

Arthroscopy :  arthroscope is inserted through a small incision, to vizualise the tear through camera and put a small device that look like darts along the tear to stitch it up. Your body will absorb these over time.

Arthroscopic partial Meniscectomy:

Your doctor will remove a piece of torn meniscus, so your knee can function normally.

After intervention, you may have to wear a brace to keep your knee stable. You will have to use crutches, for at least 1 month to keep weight off your knee.

Physical therapy is advised as a part of your recovery.
